Micro knitting and quilt block cross stitch 🧶 🪡

Sharing threads of creativity 🧵 Written by Sara Barnes

Hi again! Welcome to this week's 5/5 link pack: 5 creatively inspiring projects (and/or people) and 5 ways for you to DIY.

One of my favorite trends on TikTok right now has to do with museums and trending (or iconic) sounds. Essentially, an institution will pair a conversational sound—be it from music, TV, or just funny things people say—with one of their artworks, zooming in on the figures in the artwork as if they are recreating the conversation. Here’s one of my favorites from Fenimore Art Museum in Cooperstown, NY. Did I know about Fenimore before seeing its account? No, but now I do!

And, not related to that trend, but also museum-related. It was drilled into me as a kid not to touch the artwork in a museum. But with textiles, especially, it’s so tempting. Well, my friend Melissa shared a reel with me featuring Oceanside Museum of Art in Oceanside, CA, that gives people the opportunity to touch the artwork by installing samples of it next to the wall text.

👉 ICYMI: This bee embroidery on a real (!!) honeycomb was the most clicked link in the last 5/5.

✨ 5 creatively inspiring things

1️⃣ Liberty Fabrics has existed since the late 19th century; in fact, the company is celebrating its 150th anniversary. (I had no idea!) If you’re a fan of Liberty Fabrics, the recently published book titled Liberty. Design. Pattern. Color. explores 150 of its designs alongside a wider historical context.

2️⃣ Sardines are having a moment. I’ve seen so many sardine motifs over the past several months. (I shared a sardine cross stitch pattern in the last Orts.) And, here’s another: an interactive sardines sweater with a design you can unzip and reveal a set of sardines in a can.

3️⃣ Althea Crome is a micro knitter who creates impossibly tiny sweaters and jackets. Her piece titled Starry Night (a recreation of the classic Van Gogh painting) is just over an inch tall and contains a staggering 50,000 stitches. And that’s just one of her pieces.

4️⃣ I’m forever obsessed with Emily O’Leary’s dog rugs. They feature life-sized pups taking a peaceful slumber… as rugs. Emily uses the rug-hooking technique and (mostly) wool yarn to create her realistic pieces. If you’re curious about her process, she’s broken it down here.

5️⃣ I love a good process video, and I’ve probably watched this pressed flower art reel at least 10 times. It features tiny flowers and foliage and a cat crafted by Mujer Corazón Florido. Nothing better! And there’s more where that came from.

🪡 5 ways to DIY

1️⃣ Back in July, I shared my love of needlepoint house purses. Needlepoint, in general, seems to be having a moment, and you can now create your own needlepoint house purse with a stitch-along designed by Caitlin Bentley of Feral Notions. The pattern is free when you sign up for her newsletter.

2️⃣ In the spooky spirit already? (I am; I love fall.) I’ve rounded up 33 embroidery patterns and kits that are fall and Halloween-themed to get cozy season started right.

3️⃣ I’ve been looking at a lot of quilt blocks for design inspiration, and I came across this cute cross-stitch pattern inspired by a tulip and hearts quilt block designed by Michaela Coffield. And there’s more where that came from!

4️⃣ Does your dog like snuffle mats? Here’s a DIY version you can make using old shirt cuffs. (Our cats have the kitty version of a snuffle mat, but they aren’t into it, sadly.)

5️⃣ If you’re a quilter and have a Cricut, here’s a hack for cutting out precise shapes. Super handy if you need a lot of them; the creator, @loveineveryquilt, needed 144 of the same shape.

Here's where to find me IRL soon!

🗓️ September 27 @ Making Local Markets: I’ll be set up at Making Local in downtown Bothell! Come see me from 10 AM to 4 PM.

🗓️ September 27 @ Make Apothecary: I’ll be sneaking away from Making Local for a couple of hours to teach a sea lion embroidery workshop at Make Apothecary, just down the street. (My booth will still be open!) Sign up for the workshop here. Beginners welcome!
